It’s September which means…

…SAFETY MONTH at giggle!

I don’t want to scare you off with all the scary stats you might find online, so let’s start with something that is easy to use, grows with your child, parent-approved and absolutely adorable!

(drum roll please…)

              The S l e e p  S h e e p!

The Sleep Sheep is the ideal white noise machine that is THE perfect companion for any child’s bedtime routine. You have four different sounds to choose from: Mother’s Heartbeat, Spring Showers, Ocean Surf, and Whale Songs which will all help to provide a tranquil sleeping enviornment for baby (plus, it is parent ears approved)! You can change the sound with a push of a button, adjust the volume with a twist of a knob, attach him to the side of the crib or stroller with its easy velcro tab, and at an amazing price of $25 you can buy one for yourself, grandma’s house, and your pregnant best friend!

Being the first week of Safety Month, I wanted to start it off with a fun companion to all your sleep safety needs (i.e.: swaddles, sleep sacks, and groegg room thermometer)!

No need to overwhelm you on the first day!

Bookmarks by Beth, new books-the sequel !

Hi giggle readers! Remember when I said that there were so many new books in our Books and Media area that I couldn’t fit them all in one installment?  Well, here’s “volume 2!”

Do you have a little guy or gal who is just fascinated by machinery or transportation?  Is your new BFF “Bob the Builder?” If you answered, “yes”, then you’ll want to pick up a copy of Hard at Work, or On the Go, by Ant Parker. These simple, colorful (and wipe-able!) books are perfect for toddlers with a penchant for all things that excavate, move and make noise.  With clever captions and simple text, your kids will definitely “dig” them!

On The Go - Board Book Hard at Work - Board Book
Did you think Jamie Lee Curtis was only good at selling Activia yogurt?  Well, think again.  She’s also an excellent and prolific writer of children’s books. Along with her collaborator/illustrator, Laura Cornell,  she has created a beautiful series of books that cover such diverse topics as building self-esteem, coping with moods, developing a good vocabulary, and treating others with respect. Check out Big Words for Little People,. Today I Feel Silly, I’m Gonna Like Me, and Is there Really a Human Race.  All titles, except the last, are written for ages 4-8, and the latter is geared to ages 0 and up.  So, put down that yogurt and come on over!

Big Words for Little People  Is There Really a Human Race?
Now, it’s easier than ever to be green with our new collection of eco-friendly books.  Animals Everywhere  by Lilian Pluta, and The Five Senses by Leslie Bockol, are two short and sweet tales about the animal world and our senses. Both are written in simple rhyme schemes that will engage a toddler/early reader.  Little Helpers, also by Lilian Pluta is written for a slightly older child, (4-5 yrs.) All focus on the importance of caring for our world.  The books are made of 98% recycled materials and use only eco-friendly inks.  There’s even a section in the back of the books for parents and children that includes helpful tips on being eco-responsible citizens.  And at $6.99, you’ll save some green too.

While we’re on the subject of animals, don’t miss The Jungle Grapevine, by Alex Beard.  This book is gorgeous!!  Mr. Beard has travelled extensively throughout Africa, illustrating the wildlife he encountered, and they are the inspiration for this charming book.  As you might guess, Jungle Grapevine’s main characters are the animals, and the book is a humorous, cautionary tale about the perils of spreading rumors in the African Jungle.  Older children will enjoy the story, (a combination of Chicken Little and If you Give a Moose a Muffin) as well as the detailed illustrations.

The Jungle GrapevineSoft Shapes: Counting - Bath Book
Last, but certainly not least, are two new “floating books” from Soft Shapes. Counting and Colors, are two great ways to keep your little one engaged in and out of the bath…

Now that we’ve given you some great choices for your children’s eyes, what about something for their ears? Dan Zane can take care of that!  At giggle by popular demand, are Dan Zane’s cheerful and exuberant cd’s:  Dan Zane & Friends, Houseparty and 76 Trombones. Whichever title you choose, Dan and his band  (some celebrity guests, as well!) will have your entire family tapping, clapping, and dancing to his contagious beats.

So, what are you waiting for? Beat a path to giggle, and check out all our terrific titles. If you come on Tuesdays at 4:00 pm, stay for story-time, too.  Hope to see you there!

Check out “giggle’s” new “SWEET” neighbor!

Our intrepid on the go urban Mom Cindy has done it again …….. finding the latest and greatest in the hood !

Their’s a new bar on the block, and this one serves something a bit sweeter than martinis. The Cookie Bar (2475 N. Lincoln) opened last month to the smiles and cheers of Lincoln Park’s adults and kids alike.

The space has a cool retro vibe, and offers a wide selection of cookies from the standard chocolate chip (6 different varieties) to the more unusual Lisa Marie Presley (peanut butter, chocolate and banana). I stuck with the standard Chocolate Chip with nuts, and it was fabulous.

Pop in next time you are strolling down Lincoln (they offer a free sample). Your sweet tooth will thank you, and so will your kids!

Bookmarks by Beth..”giggle” storyteller.

Spring has brought a bumper crop of new books to giggle! Interesting and exciting book titles have sprouted up everywhere! Where do I begin?
Well, how ‘bout we start in the Barnyard, or the Jungle, or… the backyard?  Animals seem to be everywhere, beginning with our adorable new board books for very young “readers”, entitled, My Animals and My Circus, by Xavier Deneux.  These charming, sturdy black and white, square books with brightly colored accents will engage even the youngest of children.  The text is simple and the pages are wipe-able. What else could you ask for?

My Circus - Board Book          Cat the Cat, Who is That?        Let's Say Hi to Friends Who Fly!
If you answered, “More Mo Willems!”, we heard you!  Check out Mo’s latest;  Cat the Cat, Who is That?  and Let’s Say Hi to Friends Who Fly.  With his trademark sense of whimsy, Mo Willems introduces simple text and story to toddlers in a style similar to Dr. Seuss.  Lots of fun!

Speaking of fun, it doesn’t get much fun-er than If You Give a Cat a Cupcake,  the latest offering from acclaimed author, Laura Numeroff.  Kids aged 3 and up love her stories of what happens when you give a cat, a mouse  or a moose something sweet.  By the way, we also have the original best seller If You Give a Moose a Muffin.

If You Give a Cat a CupcakeChicken LittleOdd Owls & Stout Pigs

In keeping with our “animal” theme, Ed and Rebecca Emberley put a modern twist on the classic tale of Chicken Little.  Using vivid illustrations and a little artistic license, they re-tell this story in a new and engaging way, with a fun, surprise ending.  For ages 3 -5.

While we’re on the subject of “classics”, Newberry Award winning author, Arnold Lobel’s beloved Frog and Toad Together  has found its way onto our shelves.  This lovely tale of friendship is just right for readers aged 4-8.  Another Arnold Lobel title, Odd Owls and Stout Pigs, joins our offerings with fun rhyming verses about…. What else? Pigs and Owls!  Your little ones will enjoy their silly escapades and so will you.

76 Trombones   House PartyFrog & Toad Together

Last, but not least, here by popular demand, are our new Dan Zane cd’s.  You and your kids will love Dan’s fresh interpretations of the old and new.  Check out Dan Zane’s Houseparty, Dan Zane and Friends, and 76 Trombones (Show tunes!)  He’s got something for everyone, and we’ve got ‘em at giggle !

Yes, “June is bustin out all over” at giggle, and there’s just not enough room to tell you everything in this installment.  You’ll have to wait for my next entry…Or, better yet, come in a see for yourselves!
